  • First Baptist Church of Venice has been our home church for about 4 years now. We bounced around from place to place when we first moved here trying to plant our feet somewhere that we felt suited us as a family. Pastor Tom brings the sermon to life and rolls his message into real life occurrences so that you can take what you were filled with and apply it to your life once the week starts back up! The Children's ministry at First Baptist as well as the Youth Group programs are unique and always planning something special for the kids. Sunday's are wonderful as you can drop your children off and know that they will have fun, be with friends and kind teachers, and fill their spiritual cup. In this day in age, our kids need it the most. The atmosphere is very welcoming, the dress is casual or dress, whichever you prefer, they welcome you just the same. Being a part of this church family has done wonders for our family. I encourage anyone searching for a home church to give this church a visit and let God work in your lives!

We attended 3 times. We thought the minister's message we heard were "ho-hum". The adult sunday school class we attended seemed fine. However, on our 3rd visit, the sunday school teacher was talking about the parable of the field owner who paid everyone the same wage, even though some had come to work early and others had come late in the day. The entire class got wrapped up in saying things like "the owner should have paid people separately and there wouldn't have been a fight". What made us leave was how many people talked about how "unfair" it was -- no one, and I mean no one, piped up and said "I sure am glad for God's grace to all, no matter how late you come to his Son". This was disturbing enough for me that I knew we wouldn't be back.

Additionally, with the exception of the preschool children's church (which was excellent! sunday school and children's church), the children's program was abysmal. Children's sunday school for 1st and 2nd grade is run by a lovely woman who isn't mean at all. However, she's boring as all get out and runs the class like a school room from the 1950s. Everyone sits arounda table and she never took a cue that all but 2 children were laying with their heads on their arms totally zoned out and unengaged (my daughter was one of the two to try and engage but she never did connect).

At the other end of the spectrum, I felt like I was in zoo at the children's church program. The children's program was so disorganized and chaotic that my outgoing 6 year old tried to shrink into her chair. For instance, the teacher was telling the kids about "witnessing for Christ" (without explaining what that was) and kids were crawling under and on the tables, moving chairs onto the tables etc. There were easily 30 kids in there going bonkers. I felt like I was in that old movie "Brazil" -- if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about! I do have to say that they had recently changed the children's program and maybe this was something that needed smoothing out hte bugs. However, the basic weirdness of the grown ups using sunday school to talk about how unfair grace is and the teacher teaching little ones without explaining the basic Christianese he was using are fatal flaws in my book.

I feel somewhat uncomfortable writing my opinions in such a straightforward way; especially because there do seem to be some nice folks there and everyone was very friendly to us. However, I know that a church hunt in a new place can be a frustrating time drain and if anyone really connects with anything I've said here, they won't waste an entire sunday trying out some place that is not for them. In the end, we landed at The Bridge and are very happy there.

When I first moved to Venice 5 years ago I came to the church office seeking help and none was offered or given, not even prayer. I would never recommend this church to anyone. Since then God has truly helped me, but not through any there. Helping the least of these is doing unto God.
